Mexican Rotax Grand National Race Report
Saturday, 26 September 2009 21:33
Patricio traveled to the Monterrey Karting Track in Monterrey, Mexico to compete in the Mexico Rotax Grand Nationals September 24-27. After qualifying on pole .451 seconds ahead of the second qualifier Patricio finished the 16 kart pre-final on Saturday with a 12.77 second lead over the second place kart earning him the pole position for Sunday's final heat.
On Sunday Patricio was leading the race with a 4 second lead. Unfortunately Patricio got caught up in some lapped traffic and a kart he was attempting to pass hit him and sent him into the barriers. Pato made a great recovery up to third place with only a 7 second difference between him and the first place driver. Pato passsed the third place kart and was in second place but was 2.3 seconds short from first place. He was catching up the leader but there just weren't enough laps left in the race. After making a very good recovery from the lapped traffic incident Patricio finished 2nd in the 2009 Mexican Rotax Grand Nationals.
Two 2nd place wins in the two most important Rotax races in North America is quite an accomplishment for Patricio in his rookie year in Rotax Mini Max!
US Rotax Grand National Race Report
Paradise Racing traveled to Oklahoma Motorsports Complex in Norman, Oklahoma to compete against the best Rotax Mini Max racers from across the United States. Competition was tough and the 41 kart field was split into two groups for the Thursday practice sessions. The rain rolling in and out of the area meant changes between wet and dry setups and tires were necessary between sessions and made driving conditions difficult. Patricio was in the Group A practice session and had the 3rd fastest lap time in his first practice session and achieved 2nd fastest lap time in his second practice session.
On Friday the group was again split into 2 groups for qualifying. Patricio was in Group 2 and qualified 2nd in his group .8 seconds behind Trenton May and just .017 seconds ahead of fellow SWRC racer Derek Scott Jr. The Rotax Mini Max class was then split into 4 groups for heat races. Patricio finished the first heat in first place but unfortunately was penalized 10 seconds for crossing the start finish line ahead of the pole sitter, a new rule at the 2009 Grand Nationals which put Patricio in 12th position for Heat 1. Patricio finished 1st again in Heat 2 .5 seconds ahead of the rest of the pack. Patricio placed 2nd in Heat 3 .645 seconds behind Derek James Sobel and 1.156 seconds ahead of Blake Berryhill. Points accumulated from the heat races placed Patricio in 7th position on the starting grid for the Pre-Final on Saturday.
34 Rotax Mini Max karts qualified for the 14 lap Pre-Final heat on Saturday and Patricio managed to work his way up from his starting 7th position to finish the Pre-Final in 3rd place behind Ethan Low and Trenton May. The 18 lap Final event was a very close race with a side by side photo finish between Ethan Low and Patricio with the scoring software determining that Ethan Low won the heat by just .054 seconds! Congratulations Patricio on such a close 2nd place finish at this prestigious event.
